Pros: This is by far one of my favorite programs. I use several different computers for my job and I need an office application on each of the four different PC's I have to switch back and forth on each day. Saves a lot of money in the IT budget and has the same functionality as Microsoft Office and is a bit more flexible. Cons: I really have nothing negative to say about OpenOffice. Intel motherboard for mac. It's free and does a great job.
The number one strength of OpenOffice is the flexibility it gives. We can open any file type, save any file type - it's pretty much invincible.

Apache Openoffice For Mac
Pros: I love that is free, I can do work stuff from home and it is compatible with Word on my work PC. Easy to download, install and use. Great freeware.
I had this program on my Windows PC. It was a welcome alternative to the Windows equivalent and it was free!! Even though I tried and tried to use the software that came with my MacBook Pro to produce the documents I use to organize my life, I just could not use them with confidence! Open Office suite of programs are comparable to the Windows software and that makes it easy to adapt to the Mac. So far I only use the spreadsheet and word processing parts of the suite, but having the rest for presentations, etc. Is nice to have as well. Thanks Amazon for making it an easy download.
The problem, for me, with OpenOffice for Mac has always and is still its poor integration in the MacOS X environment, and one of the consequences I deplore the most is the painfully slow scroll through large documents. NeoOffice doesn't suffer from that flaw (it's a flaw for me), as scrolling is much easier and faster. Aside from that, and like all the other suites stemming from the OOo core, its functionalities are quite interesting, like its capability to export a document in the PDF format natively. I just wish it were a little faster to load and to scroll through documents. Oh yes, one thing: it's free. Very good to see it keep pace with the Windows version in terms of release date and version.
Base is an Access replacement, which means that it’s used to manipulate databases. Finally, Math lets you create mathematical formulas and equations using specialized equation editor. Each of these applications comes with friendly user interface, so if you ever used Word, you surely won’t have any problems with OpenOffice Writer. All of the basic tools will appear once you open a specific file within OpenOffice. You can add toolbars for more advances features and operations, so don’t get confused by thinking that this is a simple and basic application. This is an application which is available for a while now and since it’s completely free and very usable, millions of Mac users are actively using it.

Since you can make copies and distribute them without any expense, it is easy to install and very manageable, OpenOffice is completely accessible for beginners, it is simpler than updating to Microsoft Office 2007.
I have used OpenOffice for years on my MacBook Pro (2010, Yosemite). It recently failed and I downloaded newest version, 4.1.
What do I like BEST about A.O.O.? You have kept the menus and tool bars looking the same.
